Development of Blue and White Ceramics
Evolution and development of blue and white ceramics since the 13th
century. Beginning of blue and white porcelain still a shrouded mystery as no one can say when it was
produced. However, during the fourteen century blue and white porcelain were fairly common but how long before that
it was made was not clear.
During the Tang Dynasty, cobalt glazes but during the rule of Sung Dynasty, it was
more conservative and inward looking. The taste during the Sung Dynasty favored muted glazes of jade like superb
monochrome wares that were produced during period. Magnificent monochromes with some stoutly potted stone jars
known as tzu chou wares decorated with freely drawn motifs in brown or black under a creamy glazed.
After Sung
Dynasty were overruled by Kublai Khan, formed the Yuan Dynasty start the
copy of some Middle Eastern ceramics form which are decorating their wares with cobalt blue.
With this we can assume the beginning of the first blue and white porcelain era
started at the either the right at the end of the thirteenth or else the very early 14th
century.
During the evolution, a complete break away from the conservative minded of the
Sung Dynasty, found blue and white porcelain to be vulgar and
garish.
The most prominent of blue and white porcelain ever to be made to imperial order
during the Yuan Dynasty. A bluish white ware made for the palace decorated in slip
with the characters shu-fu (privy council). Some of the Shu fu characters are dragons and serpentine
dragons.
Now where do potters get the idea of decorating wares with underglazed painting. The
Persian Potters have been decorating their earthen wares with underglazed blue since the 10th
century.
Earliest blue and white is decorated with floral motifs and copied in the new genre.
Transitional state seen many bluish white glaze wares known as ching pai (bluish white) or ying ching (shadow
blue).
