Neolithic Period – 2000 BC

Chinese civilization began within a major river valley. Modern China itself is a huge geographical expanse. Around 4000 BC, this huge area contained an almost infinite number of ethnic groups and languages. The course of Chinese history, however, is in part dominated by a single ethnic group and language. This history, in which a vast area populated by diverse ethnic groups became, over time, a more or less single culture, began in the Yellow River Valley.

Neolithic Pottery Jar

Painted pottery jar with wave design in black and red since Neolithic period 2000 BC excavated in Linhsia of Kansu province

The Yellow River is the northernmost of the major Chinese rivers. Directly to the south is the Yangtze River; south of the Yangtze is the West River; south of the West River is the Red River, much of which passes through modern-day Vietnam. Sometime around 4000 BC, when the area was much more temperate and forested, populations around the southern bend of the Yellow River began to practice agriculture. They sowed millet, but some time later, the Chinese began cultivating rice to the south, near the Huai River. These were a Neolithic, tribal people who used stone tools. We know also that they domesticated animals very early on, but they still continued as a hunter society as well. Remains of game animals are almost as common as domestic animals in these villages. We know almost nothing about them, for they left no records, and the life-blood of a people does not flow in the archaeological refuse they leave behind. We believe that tribal warfare was common and that they may have had some form of ancestor worship, but these are mere guesses.

Drawing on both the results of recent arhaeological research as well as anthropological theory, leading experts synthesize current thinking on the nature of and variation within Neolithic social arrangements. The authors analyze archaeological data within a range of methodological and theoretical perspectives to reconstruct key aspects of ritual practices, labor organization, and collective social identity at the scale of the household, community, and region.

In Ming dynasty, cloisonne work reached its full development in both quality and quantity. The Emperor Ching t’si (1459 – 1487) took such interest in promoting the industry that the cloisonne became known as Ching-tai-lan or the blue of Ching Tai.

Besides coral red and deep yellow, the principal colors on Ming dynasty cloisonne were two shades of blue turquoise and dark lapis lazuli.

The Qing dynasty, the generous lacquer technology is more perfect than the Ming Dynasty. Tao-kuang generous fetal skin outline in gold lacquer and so unique, and Beijing carved lacquer, Shanxi cloud carving, etc., and go down in history as famous.

Ming Lacquer Cover Box

Ming dynasty lacquer box with peony design dated Yung-lo (1360-1424) was the third emperor of the Ming dynasty of China

Generous Lacquer: Homeopathic Change, To Enter The Market

1915, held in San Francisco in the United States opened the Panama Canal, 10000 State Fair, Guizhou and Jiangsu Yangzhou lacquerware lacquerware generous both received silver, and subsequently with Maotai, Yuping Xiao Di and said “Guizhou Sambo,” thus Dafang County, known as the “National Paint the town.” However, the tide of the market economy, the generous lacquer has twists and turns, ups and downs several times, and now we are pleased to see that –

Generosity have had the unique geographical and climatic conditions, soil suitable for cultivation of lacquer, the lacquer produced an excellent texture. Generous “big wooden paint” and “well-being of paint”, “Mao dam paint,” “I paint the city” as the four famous paint. Generous paint laccase content heavy, conjunctiva good film color depth, thick liquid paint, moisture content light, acid, alkali, wear, moisture, high temperature, has always been “side of clear lacquer, such as oil, we see beauty head, Dangqi tiger color, to bring fishing hooks do. ” With such a high-quality lacquer is resources and began casting a generous culture of well-known lacquer ware and lacquer ware. Speaking generous lacquer, right in this trade, who has studied Xianjingmaoju Chang Shi Lu, deputy director backs of their hands.

According to historical records, generous piece of lacquer ware production began in the Ming Dynasty Hongwu years have elapsed since the 600 years of history. Yi Xiang extravagant female politician’s wife so that during the passage of Guizhou Xuan Wei, Chu Yuan-chang tribute to a “party matter”, the there are many lacquer treasures.

In time, dedicated and generous lacquer for “Longevity Palace”, “Yoshimori the public” and so on more than 10 lacquerware workshop. Craft skill of its artists, particularly in modeling, integer techniques for high quality in order to type accurately, and seam close together, is known for meticulous craftsmanship. 1915, held in San Francisco in the United States opened the Panama Canal, 10000 State Fair, Guizhou and Jiangsu Yangzhou lacquerware lacquerware generous both received silver, and subsequently with Maotai, Yuping Xiao Di and said “Guizhou Sambo.”

After 1949, the generous lacquer ware from the establishment of production cooperatives, to the formation of state-owned generous lacquer factory, the old artist’s skills into full play, the young artists receive training and exercise. In addition to the traditional process of succession, but also sent people to learn from Fuzhou, advanced technology, so generous in the original lacquer on the basis of some innovation, lacquer over more than 200 kinds of varieties, the product not only in the domestic market, while exports to Eastern Europe.

After the reform and opening up, is generous in maintaining the traditional characteristics of lacquer on the basis of continuous innovation, product development to more than 400 kinds of, access to provincial, and departmental standards title, winning a variety of handicrafts, treasures the Central Museum collection in 1984 has also been selected for the first 23 sessions of the Los Angeles Olympic Games souvenirs.

However, the generosity of lacquer ware in the long history of several centuries, although the creation of a number of brilliant, but after several twists and turns, ups and downs several times. Today, the county has a certain capacity of enterprises is only 3, that is generous lacquer factory, big Fang hair lacquer factory, generous carving factory, are private enterprises. In addition, there are more than 10 small workshops. Once brilliant and generous state-owned factory lacquer discontinued for two years, is currently idle factory, the workers all lost.

Data show that the county generous lacquer sales from 5 years ago, more than 1,000 million yuan, down to the present more than 600 million yuan and tax revenue to provide only 50 million. Such a “report card” and generous well-known lacquer ware is not consistent. Shi Lu Chang said.

Shi Lu Chang believes that the current development status lacquer generous concern, the main manifestations: traditional crafts are being lost. Fetal skin lacquer, hidden flower, flower outline in gold lacquer, black push-ray technology, is a generous lacquer Zhuanjiazhibao. The reason why generous lacquer lacquer ware in China account for a family place, precisely because of these unique skills. But the reality is that fetal skin lacquer is almost lost, and the production of leather and old tires are few artists, young artists a rare opportunity to poetry, let alone inherit. In addition, the reduction in the level craft, design stagnant, packaging, simple, ambiguous position, business order and chaos, College Students Donate Sperm production site and other factors also contributed to the generous lacquerware industry is downsizing the key.

Trace the reasons for impeding the development of generous lacquer were: lack of protection measures for traditional crafts. The late 90s of the last century, is generous and skillful art of old lacquer artist after another retirement, an increase in new workers and apprentices. Handicrafts are mostly relying on mass production techniques to help with the traditional method of apprenticeship, the old artists do not want to teach, new artists do not want to learn, lack of appropriate training systems, business information and skills not focus on experience in the compilation process coupled with fetal skin dirty, tired, hidden flower very complicated processes, resulting in lost traditional crafts.

Meanwhile, the cultivation of lacquer art artists missing, the lack of design talent, as well as generous lacquer art of positioning and market positioning has not studied, in addition to the lack of generous lacquer brand protection measures, which are impeding the development of the key reasons for generous lacquer.

Generous tradition of lacquer ware techniques and industry whether it is allowed to disappear, or continue “chipping away”, or allowed to shine bigger and stronger?

Not long ago, I saw and heard the interview in the county, people see the generous lacquer hope.

Since last year, generous county, the county government loudly that “transmission of lacquer to revive lacquer industry, creating lacquer ware brand” slogan.

The Government’s guidance, in March 2008, is generous and lacquer Association was formally established (for the country’s second home). In the same year in October, is generous and counties of China Arts and Crafts Association, also awarded the “Hometown of lacquer ware in China.” Is currently being formed and generous Lacquer (Group) Co., Ltd., by 3 to 5 years to integrate the county lacquer resources, increased technological innovation, the corporation has become bigger and stronger, the annual output value of more than 50 million yuan. At the same time, effectively increasing technology transfer and scientific and technological innovation, Investment efforts to support non-public enterprises and foreign invested enterprises set up lacquer processing enterprises.

Actively supporting the production of lacquer ware, while trade associations do a good job of self-discipline, and led the development of generous lacquer industry standards, to declare “generous lacquer” geographical indications of origin protection of national certification.

Shen Xiao-chun said the county party secretary from the national industry-oriented point of view, the development of lacquer ware industry, in line with national long-term development strategies; from the county agriculture and farmers need to look at the development of lacquer can promote the agricultural structure adjustment, a large number of farmers planting sumac can promote income; from eco – construction, environmental protection requirements of point of view, large-scale cultivation of lacquer trees, can increase the forest cover and promote sustainable socio-economic development; from the requirements of tourism development point of view, generous lacquer crafts as a tourist commodity, is rich in historical connotation and national cultural foundation, you can make as a “Sambo, Guizhou,” one of the generous lacquer which branch of the nation bloom even more brilliant.

According to reports, generous counties have taken advantage of the natural geographical and climatic conditions, large-scale cultivation of fine lacquer. County Forestry Bureau to the information provided: the eight-county Fort, ternary, constellation and other towns have been large-scale cultivation of lacquer trees, in 2007, have been planted in 2600 on the basis, but also planted 6,000 acres of contiguous, while the establishment of a 200 mu breeding base for lacquer. According to generous fruit characteristics of industrial development planning, lacquer tree planting focus on the layout of the 10 townships, a total of 10 hectares planted.

In the county this year, held February 25 to promote generous lacquerware industry conferences, decision-makers decided to follow-up lacquer as a pillar industry to nurture. First, increase the financial resources of lacquer ware production enterprise support, while the reform of state-owned lacquer ware factory, through the restructuring, integration lacquer resources, joint ventures, holding and other mode of operation to expand the production scale of lacquer ware, improve product quality.

At present, the generous county is actively rescue and excavation soon lost the traditional technique of traditional lacquer art experience to compile and generous to prepare for the need of educating people; the operation of the traditional techniques, employing the old artists in order to pass, to help with the way transmission ; on long-term commitment to generous lacquering techniques, the old artists and craftsmen, as well as outstanding contributions to the artists, the county will be granted the title of traditional arts and crafts artists and to give a certain degree of economic treatment. Obvious effect of this initiative, in 2006, colorful Guizhou Tourism commodities “two sessions, one race,” on the generous introduction of an implicit flower “Wufeng rising sun,” mill lacquer, because exquisitely made, exquisite workmanship, not only attracts many tourists eye, also provincial committee, as patent protection.

At the same time, counties also focus on cultivating a generous lacquer reserve personnel. According to the present lacquer painted decoration and design, marketing professionals serious deficiencies of the status quo, the county co-cultured with the universities painting decoration, shape, structure, packaging, design and sales personnel.

For the generous lacquer product positioning, some experts have suggested, first of all have their own national identity and regional characteristics, while based on scientific and technological progress, promoting technological innovation and product innovation. On this basis, according to market demand, combined with modern materials, process equipment and technology and many other elements designed to produce products suitable for various types of consumer favorite. I understand that the generous county in order to improve the quality of lacquer products, expand production scale, reduce labor intensity, is on the lacquer processing enterprises for technological transformation.

Right now, generous county in the lacquer product development, in addition to factories in cooperation with the Maitai annual output of 100,000 “Guizhou Maotai” box, but also aimed at the rapid development of the province in recent years, the tea industry, currently has more than 10 tea processing enterprises entered into an agreement to produce the box. In addition, the generous lacquer processing enterprises also focus on national products, travel goods, high-grade furniture, jewelry boxes, painting, funeral and religious supplies to work on a number of product development.

Speaking generous lacquerware industry, county lurin confidence, he worked out an account: by 2010, the county planted 10 hectares sumac, farmers can get from this project labor remuneration, in the lacquer paint the normal production after the calculation, can realize an annual output of 1,100 tons lacquer, the annual output value will reach 121 million. At the same time the annual output value of lacquer ware products up to 5000 million yuan, profit and tax 10 million yuan to solve 500 jobs. It is understood that generous county is setting up and painted with lacquer art institute, the use of modern hand-off and method to study the growth of generous lacquer, lacquer ware production process, while research and development of new products on the market.

Asian lacquer ware is well known to artwork collectors worldwide, and is the result of some of the most interesting craftsmanship techniques in the world. Lacquer ware is created by applying lacquer to wooden objects to offer it a fine end and luster. Although the craft was developed in each China and Japan, Japanese craftsmen are usually credited with taking Chinese language lacquer methods and maturing them to create the highly regarded art form that lacquer ware creation has become today.

THE sound of prayers and hymns came from Christ Church in Malacca’s Dutch Square during the launch of the Holland Days In Melaka.

Martin's Rembrant painting

The week-long event was organised by the Netherlands Embassy to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the 50th Merdeka celebrations.

Christ Church, constructed in 1753, is perhaps the only place in the Dutch Square that still serves its original purpose. It gave the event a nostalgic feel of the old days when the Dutch ruled Malacca from 1641 to 1824.

A young bride, posing for’ pictures here, said: “There’s historical charm in the buildings. We were awed by them and decided that we must have our wedding pictures taken here.”

The red laterite Stadthuys (1650), originally the residence of the Dutch Governor and his officials, now houses souvenir stores and a plethora of museums, among them the History and Ethnography Museum.

Dutch Antique Pendant made with blue and white porcelain salvaged from shipwrecks

Statues of cows, Holland’s most iconic animal, lent atmosphere to the Dutch Square. The five life-sized cows, made of plastic and fibreglass, were painted with colourful scenes by artists and children of European Union countries. Placed near the clock tower and fountain, the cows were part of an original 28 made to represent the 27 EU countries and the EU Commission.

Children were seen cuddling the cows while their parents took pictures. The Holland cow featured pink, red and yellow tulips sprouting towards the blue and white sky.

“Cows are an important symbol for Holland,” said Dutch Ambassador Lody Embrechts. He said it symbolised the importance of agriculture as agricultural activities take up 60 per cent of land in Holland.

Unfortunately, except for red roses, stalls at the event offered only fake flowers. There were some fresh tulips but they were not of good quality as it was not the tulip season.

Holland Days In Melaka evoked memories of Dutch rule and one could feel it at the Tradewind Treasures store near the Stadthuys door. Here, one can literally take home a piece of history on one’s finger or around one’s neck. Blue and white porcelain from the Wanli (1625) and Desaru shipwrecks (1830) in the South China Sea were set in silver pendants, earrings and rings and sold as jewellery.

dutchantique- turtle money

The Wanli was a Portuguese vessel that sank off the Terengganu coast while Desaru was a Chinese vessel that sank off )ohor. Porcelain items from the two wrecks, such as plates and kendi (teapots), were sold at auctions or exhibitions. Broken ones were cut up so that the little paintings on them, such as deer, dragons, phoenixes and auspicious writings, could be immortalised on rings and pendants.

Holland Days In Melaka was an opportunity for collectors of Delft blue porcelain to watch master artist Martin V.D. Berg at work. His crafts ranged from little blue and white coasters, teapots, flower pots and fancifully shaped jars, to larger, multi-hued paintings of Dutch people, towns, windmills, country scenes and his favourite artist, Rembrandt.

It covers many different porcelains, such as Arita wares which were mainly blue-and-white, as well as polychrome enamel porcelain made by an assortment of potters. The wares were shipped through the Northern Kyushu port of Imari, from where they derive their name. A Chinese porcelain design made during the Ming period, and known today as “Chinese Imari,” was the inspiration for the Japanese potters.

An exceptionally well-decorated bowl from
the Taisho period. Notice the lavish use of gold decoration. (Inset: Inside view of the Taisho-period bowl).

The decoration was cobalt blue with touches of green, iron red, and gold, the Chinese pieces being more sparsely decorated on a predominantly white background. Most of the ware was utilitarian. We find plates, cups, serving dishes, and teapots decorated with floral designs, animals, and scenes of Chinese life. The Japanese adopted this decoration and made it uniquely their own, as they did with so many other art objects they took from the Chinese.

Japanese Imari is divided into five time periods: Momoyama (1615); Edo (1615-1868); Meiji (1868-1912); Taisho (1912-1926); and Showa (1926 to the present). The earliest Imari, or “Old Imari”, was manufactured during the Momoyama period in western Japan, as the clay in that region was rich in iron, making it suitable for firing at high temperatures. This produced a hard and serviceable ware, perfect for utilitarian purposes. Most of these pieces were blue-and-white. During the Edo and Meiji periods, polychrome enamel decoration was favored by the Japanese aristocrats who were the main buyers of porcelain. There were five main colors: cobalt blue, iron red, blue, green, and gold.

As the Japanese masses prospered, they also demanded porcelain rather than the wood and lacquer utensils they used previously, and the high quality of Imari deteriorated to mass production.

A large jar decorated with birds and flowers in the polychrome design was the beginning of our fascination with Imari porcelains.

The Fukagawa Family and Their Porcelain
Koransha was founded in 1875. Ezaiemon Fukagawa started to produce porcelain for export to Europe and America. He named his company “Koransha,” which means “The Company of the Scented Orchid.”

Sei Ji Kai Sha, which stands for
“The Company of Pure Water,” was founded in 1879 by members of the Fukagawa and other families in Arita
who were at one time associated with Koransha. The company made dinner ware for the Western market. In 1894, the Fukagawa Porcelain Manufacturing Company was founded. This company still exists today and manufactures some of the finest contemporary Imari. It is still being operated by the Fukagawa family.

Imari And The Collector
What To Look For
Brilliant colors, clear designs and pleasing forms. Avoid “muddy” and poorly-painted pieces. Do not buy restored or damaged wares.

Diversify
Choose from different designs: floral, animals, birds, tapestry, and people. Look for different background colors. Chocolate-brown is a rare and unusual color to collect. Buy a piece of Fukagawa–there is no finer Imari!

Unusual Shapes
Bird, fish, boat and fan designs are fun. Try to find a “Black Ship” piece, commemorating the Dutch traders and their sailing vessels. These are rare (and pricey)!

Prices
Imari porcelain is still affordable, although some of the unusual pieces are expensive. Small trays and plates, saki cups, and bowls can be purchased for under one-hundred dollars.

When In Doubt
Its best to consult an expert. There are many reputable dealers who specialize in Oriental porcelain. They will be happy to assist you.

Study
There are several good books on the market about Imari. “Famous Ceramics of Japan — Imari”, by Takeshi Nagatake and “Imari, Satsuma and Other Japanese Export Ceramics”, by Nancy N. Schiffer, are my favorites. They can be ordered through any bookseller or try your local library.

Handle, Hold, and Fondle
There is no better way to get to know the “feel” of any porcelain.

Get Going
There must be an antique show, flea market or trip in your future! Buy just one piece and you’ll be hooked!

Statement of significance

Silver-smithing in Malaysia began many centuries after the use of gold, as silver is not indigenous there, although it is mined in Burma, Laos and Thailand, and had to be imported by foreign traders. The silver industry in Malaysia declined in the 1930s when there was a shortage of silver and cheap commercial products came onto the market. Today there are only a few families who work with silver in Malaysia.

Large decorative belt buckles like this were mainly worn by men on official occasions. They were typically made of silver, which was not indigenous to Malaysia, and their size was an indicator of rank. In addition to serving as personal adornment, the jewellery of Southeast Asia generally is rich with symbolism and serves as an effective medium for displays of wealth and status.

This object is one of a collection of belt buckles donated by Sir F J Benton on behalf of the New South Wales Applied Trust. The Trust, originally known as the New South Wales Collectors and Connoisseurs Society, was established in 1926 by Charles Laseron, who served at the Museum (formerly the Technological Museum), as collector and Officer in Charge, Applied Arts, from 1906 until 1929. The Trust was formed to hold a collection in readiness for the establishment of a new Applied Art Museum, though this was never to eventuate. Laseron and his companions gave items themselves and solicited donations along with cash from private donors to make purchases at forthcoming auctions. The Museum holds a number of letters from Laseron relating to this matter. In 1927 the Trust placed its impressive collection on indefinite loan to the Museum. This significant collection comprises 283 accessions and relates to an important period of the Museum’s collecting history.
