Updated: 2006-05-31 05:52 HONG KONG: A rare underglaze copper-red Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) vase sold for HK$78.52 million (US$10.13 million) in Hong Kong yesterday, setting a world auction record for Ming porcelain. Theow Tow, Deputy Chairman of Christie’s Asia and the Americas International Director of Chinese works of Arts, looks at an early Ming underglaze copper-red vase after it was sold for a world record of US$10,122,558 for any Ming porcelain during an auction in Hong Kong May 30, 2006. “He’s bought the vase at the right price, making a world record,” said Edward Dolman, chief executive officer of Christie’s International, referring to buyer Steve Wynn, chairman of Macao-based Wynn Resorts.

The pear-shaped vase, decorated with a peony scroll, is the only copper-red vase of the early Ming Dynasty still in perfect condition to be offered at auction in more than 15 years, said Christie’s Hong Kong office.

The vase was originally inherited by a Scottish couple who used it as a lamp and did not realize its value until they saw a similar example in a museum.

Ceramics with underglaze copper-red decoration are very rare, owing to their complicated production process.

Mineral copper used to produce the raspberry-red tone is notoriously difficult to control during the firing process, and often leaves the porcelain with a grey or almost colourless coating.

Of the small number of underglaze copper-red Ming vases remaining, most have suffered some degree of damage, especially on the narrow and thin necks. The peony vase auctioned yesterday is one of rare successes where the pattern is expertly executed and the colour is evenly distributed, and has also survived without damage.

Forgotten Vase Sells For GDP2.82mil

London : Hidden away amid shoe boxes and dresses, a precious 18th century

Chinese vase sat in a closet virtually forgotten for three decades before selling for more than GDP2.82mil on Wednesday, 7 November 2007, a British action house said.

This vase’s Swiss owner put her piece up for action after spotting a similar work at a museum here, Sotheby’s said: Her blue-and-white “dragon” vase had been sitting at the bottom of her wardrobe since the 1970’s when her expert told her the piece was a copy.

“They did her a huge favor” said Alastair Gibson, the head of Sotheby’s Chinese department here. “It would have been worth about GDP10,000 then and now it’s just made, as you know GDP2.5million plus.”

The international market for Chinese antiquities is booming, fuelled in part by an increasing appetite on behalf of wealthy Chinese collectors for relics of their country’s imperial past.

Statement of significance

Silver-smithing in Malaysia began many centuries after the use of gold, as silver is not indigenous there, although it is mined in Burma, Laos and Thailand, and had to be imported by foreign traders. The silver industry in Malaysia declined in the 1930s when there was a shortage of silver and cheap commercial products came onto the market. Today there are only a few families who work with silver in Malaysia.

Large decorative belt buckles like this were mainly worn by men on official occasions. They were typically made of silver, which was not indigenous to Malaysia, and their size was an indicator of rank. In addition to serving as personal adornment, the jewellery of Southeast Asia generally is rich with symbolism and serves as an effective medium for displays of wealth and status.

This object is one of a collection of belt buckles donated by Sir F J Benton on behalf of the New South Wales Applied Trust. The Trust, originally known as the New South Wales Collectors and Connoisseurs Society, was established in 1926 by Charles Laseron, who served at the Museum (formerly the Technological Museum), as collector and Officer in Charge, Applied Arts, from 1906 until 1929. The Trust was formed to hold a collection in readiness for the establishment of a new Applied Art Museum, though this was never to eventuate. Laseron and his companions gave items themselves and solicited donations along with cash from private donors to make purchases at forthcoming auctions. The Museum holds a number of letters from Laseron relating to this matter. In 1927 the Trust placed its impressive collection on indefinite loan to the Museum. This significant collection comprises 283 accessions and relates to an important period of the Museum’s collecting history.

Belt buckle (pinding), repousse silver, maker unknown, Malay Peninsular, South East Asia, early 20th century

A silver pinding or belt buckle that is navette shaped, tapering to a point at either end. The traditional Malay belt buckle is crafted in repousse and features a prominent raised rosette like motif in the centre with trefoil floral motifs on either side. Sotheby’s, Taking One for All Auctioneers

What happens when you have 20 various creditors to a dealer’s bankruptcy, who wants to opt out first? Sotheby’s, of course, is trying to opt out of the NY State Supreme Court ruling by Judge Richard B. Lowe III that blocks the sale of all art items inside the Salander-O’Reilly Gallery in New York City. Do auctioneers have a higher calling for works of art than a bank or consigner? Welcome to the vigor of the Sotheby’s/Christie’s duopoly.

Fresh off winning State approval for holding auctions of wine, the distinction of blurring the lines or embellishing the practice of auctioneering by the duopoly is well done and well thought out. In designing legal outcomes to their fashion, whether it’s expanding into new areas or preventing changes in their methods, their aggressive approach has been quite successful. However, this Court ruling would allow their claim to circumvent any legislative initiative, which is much more difficult to enact. If Sotheby’s is successful, my advice is to give your works of art to the auctioneer and then your merchandise is protected from the court and creditors. That’s a scenario that Sotheby’s and any auctioneer would love.
