During the Sung Dynasty (960 – 1279) the region in Chun Prefecture region uses Chun kilns where the ceramics manufactures were known as Chun Ware.

Chun ware porcelain is famous for the color of its glazes with substantial variation with a wide full range of celadon, blue, purple and red glazes. The richness of the glaze colors of objects like planters, bowls, plates and pot stands was beyond imagination. Two different colors, hues, or tones on both the inside and the outside of the vessel occurred frequently.

Purple and red mottle were applied over a monochrome bluish green or sky blue glaze. Many of these glaze effects were unintended and thus difficult to recreate.

Ancient scholars thus referred to the glaze on Chun ware as “art by accident”.
