A controversial new survey of an made famous by the Chinese THE lid of the charming, round enamelled metal box (pictured) is decorated with squat, rosy apples. Their colour gradually shifts from red to orange to yellow. This cheerful yet subtle object, less than 7.5cm across, is one of the highlights of a New York exhibition, “Cloisonne: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties”. There are 161 pieces: vases and incense burners, shrines, teapots and candlesticks. Many creatures make an appearance, among them an arrogant rooster, a pair of lions and a very annoyed-looking goose. An extravagant basin is enamelled on the interior with swimming fish. The self-professed aim of the exhibition and its scholarly catalogue is to examine cloisonne production in China, from its emergence in the late Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) to the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The attribution of the earliest pieces will raise eyebrows. For decades these have been described as early Ming…

The vase, which measures 11.5? (29cm) tall, is the largest recorded from a rarefied group of early Ming moonflasks dating from the Yongle period (1403-1424), could fetch over a million pounds when it goes under the hammer in Dorset. The vase epitomises the taste of the Yongle Emperor and demonstrates the exceptional level of refinement achieved during his reign. The blue and white decoration exhibits the characteristic “heaping and piling” and the quality and delicacy of the porcelain was not equalled in Europe until the 18th century. The vase, or flask, has …

Exotic flowers blossom in a feast of color, their petals opening in celebration of life lived, adorning this extraordinary urn. The blooms decorate the sky blue background in joyful form, for ancient Thai custom would have the ashes of a dearly deposited in a similar khod urn or casket. The khod would then be placed upon the home’s altar to inspire devoted prayer. Khun Santiparp masterfully creates this piece, resplendent in Benjarong porcelain excellence. Benjarong takes its name from the Sanskrit words panch and rang, meaning five colors which frequently include red, yellow, white, green, and blue. It originated in China, and came to Thailand as of the dowry of Chinese princesses. It soon found favor by Thai aristocrats and the wealthy by the 1300s, during the Ming Dynasty, the Kings of Thailand ordered Benjarong from Chinese potters. Eventually, in the early 1800′s, during the reign of King Rama II, Thai began producing Benjarong for the Royal with a…

I was just clarifying the concept of who the Crusades, all, wasn't making a statement about religious preference. And I was saying that, yes the Crusades were horrible, but without them, the freedoms we enjoy today very well may have never existed. And the U.S. create Israel the U.N. did. So why are Palestinians angry at the West, when they were equally represented in the U.N.? You go killing people because you get what you wanted.

Flowers blossoming on spring fields inspire the design of this Benjarong porcelain jar from Khun Santiparp. It features a lotus shaped lid with hand painted enamel motifs. The rims on the jar and lid are delicately painted in gray. Benjarong is a millenary form that dates back to China’s Ming dynasty.

A shining sun smiles in the realm of Maya mysticism, its rays brightening corn cobs guarded by four animal deities. Chaac Mol adorns the sun’s face as Georgina A. Tagle casts its image in the ceramic traditions of her native Otumba. Tagle incorporates Maya motifs found in the pyramids of the Yucatan peninsula as she blends her own ingenuity, her family’s trade, and her country’s tradition. A warming addition to any patio d?cor. Cabrera works with a special clay sent to her by her relatives from her natal Otumba. The clay comprises of three different types of clay blended with plumilla the flower from reeds along the local riverbanks. Once the clay has taken form, it is left to dry in the sun for up to five days before baking at approximately 450? C. Finally, Cabrera uses acrylics to hand paint the piece, providing the adequate accents for the viewer to appreciate the impressive symbols of a long admired civilization.
